“Sweep your front porch first before you sweep somebody else’s” is an old metaphor of telling someone not to criticize someone else. The origins of the metaphor come from the civic act of sweeping which is done after every daily meal, in and outside the house. It may not be done the same way in every culture, but it all ties to the civic act of cleaning.
